Is Keto a Fad Diet? Yes & No
You’ve heard of Keto. You may have even tried Keto. Maybe you abandoned it, writing it off as a Fad diet. I did. So I understand. Let’s take a look at what changed my mind and why Keto might actually be a beneficial tool to keep in your box! The day keto let me down and a honey stick saved me.
What I Cover in this Discussion:
Swearing off Keto Forever (1:24)
How I discovered Keto, went all in with a 40 lb brick of cream cheese and a bacon addiction and how I passed out on a mountain and swore Keto off forever.
Rethinking Ketogenics (3:20)
Here how the casual mention of an Alzheimer’s study hit all the buzz words in my mind and peaked my curiosity. How a desperate desire to be smarter and sharper as I delved back into school led me to deep dive all things Keto and use myself as a guinea pig!
What is a Fad Diet? (5:55)
Popular for a time, promotes rapid weight loss, requires little work or a “quick fix,” eliminates necessary nutrients, and above all, is temporary. Listen to this clip to hear why keto can but shouldn’t fit these parameters.
Benefits of a Ketogenic Diet (done right) (8:53)
Note for the purposes of this brief discussion, generalities are made and presented simply.
Energy regulation (9:19)
Increased Mental Focus (10:05)
Anti-inflammatory (11:00)
Not mentioned in the video: Besides inducing autophagy and apoptosis and regulating insulin, Keto treats inflammation by preventing much of it altogether…on a well designed ketogenic diet you aren’t taking in processed, inflammatory foods and you drop grains and other problematic food that are infamous for causing chronic inflammation.
Satiation: Goodbye “Hungry Girl” (12:18)
Cancer Prevention and Disease Management…an exciting frontier!** (13:25)
Cholesterol Regulation (14:34)
Stabilizing Blood Sugar (15:50)
Stabilizing Mood and Supporting Brain Function (16:45)
Weight Loss* (17:50)
A note that keto is also beneficial for people that don’t need to lose weight!
**A note on cancer: I am not claiming to be qualified to treat cancer or that keto is a cure for cancer. I am saying that keto has shown promising results in preliminary studies on sugar-fed cancers and the mechanisms behind keto are conducive to the prevention of cancer and systemic healing.
The Difference Between Fad “Dirty Keto” and Non-fad “Clean Keto”
Junk Food vs Real, Whole Food (20:43)
Generic vs Tailored (22:40)
Temporary vs Lifestyle (24:00)
Restriction/Lists vs Efficient Eating (25:50)
Enduring vs Thriving (26:35)
Guess work, Supervision vs. Educated and Intuitive (27:21)
Not on the video:
No or few Veggies vs High percentage plant based, lots of variety!
Some people function under the misconception that Keto is a revamped Atkins and they picture eating lots of meat and cheese, bacon and butter all day. Not so! If you are not eating more vegetables than you ever have, you are not doing it right!

Wrap Up (30:00)
Keto can be approached as a fad diet, with a temporary mindset and a short term strategy. But when approached as a long term practice with the intention of using as a tool for life, the game changes. The focus becomes on healthy food choices, more diversity, intuitive eating and overall healing.
Keto becomes a powerful tool in your “health box” that can be used as needed for regular maintenance or tune ups.
Ketogenics is a metabolic pathway—the ability to burn fat for fuel efficiently—that is natural, but largely atrophied by our modern lifestyle and food choices. Ideally, we want to be able to switch easily between burning carbohydrates and burning fat so we can enjoy the best of both worlds and all the benefits of a robust and flexible metabolism. Putting some time and energy into flexing our keto muscles, reinforcing that metabolic pathway is an investment that will pay dividends for years to come. It doesn’t mean you are locked into a rigid eating paradigm, in the end, it really opens up possibilities!
